After air, the most essential substance is water which is must for animals and plants to survive. We cannot imagine the existence of life without water.

Water is not only needed to drink only but also in various perspective from cooking to bath. Also in different industries, water is much needed substance.

There is a total of 71% water on the earth’s surface. Out of which, 96.5% is in the Oceans as salt water while 1.2% is potable & the remaining is in freshwater lakes, frozen in glaciers and in the two poles of earth.

As the drinking water is limited in the earth, we must very much concern about it otherwise crisis of water may be taken place in the upcoming days. We can overcome this crisis by saving water in our daily life. In the following discussion, we shall discuss “how to save water in our daily life?”.

1. Repair leaks in toilet

Daily approximately 80 – 100 gallons of water is wasted through leaks in toilet. To check whether there are any leaks you can use color.

At first, take some color then put it in your toilet if you found appearance of color without doing flush. Then it must be due to leakage that must be repaired to save water.

2. Use low flush in toilet

To lower the wastage of water in toilet, you can use low flush in your toilet. It is found that in normal flush water is released three to four times than lower flush.

3. Don’t use toilet as dustbin

Whenever you use your toilet as dustbin and flushes the items thrown in it, wasted nearly four to six gallons of water every time.

4. Shorter your Shower duration

While you are taking shower, it discharges six to eight gallons water per minute. At the time of soaping, washing down, rise off lower your shower to reduce extra wastage of water.

5. Use water-saving shower

Use of water-saving shower will cut down flow of water from three to five gallons per minute. It is easy to set up in your shower system and will no effect shower experience as it was before.

6. Taking of Bath

To use lesser water, it is recommended to take bath in a bath tub which is partially filled with water. In this process, use of water is less than shower.

7. While brushing teeth turn off the tap

Get your brush wet while intended to brush your teeth and take a jug of water to wash your mouth.

8. Turn the water off during shaving

Turn off the flow of water and take warm water just to rinse razor. After shaving take water in a pot and clean your face.

9. Turn the water off while washing hands

Don’t let your tap on while scrubbing. At first, get your hands wet and then turn the tap off. When you want to clean your hands then turn the tap on.

10. Use Aerator in Tap/Faucet

Use of aerator in your tap/ faucet will help air to mix with water which gives continuous flow of water even you are using less water. Use of tap/ faucet aerator is very easy, less expensive and effective.

It will save around 80% of water you wasted during different activities in comparison of tap/ faucet without aerator. You can also use tap/faucet aerator in your bathroom.

11. Don’t install RO water purifier if not necessary

You should know that using a RO water purifier takes 3 liter water to purify 1 liter water. Which indicates we get only 25% as pure water and rest 75% as waste.

According to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), TDS level up to 500 mg/liter is safe and can be used as drinking water.

So, you don’t need to use RO water purifier if TDS of normal water is within the range i.e. below 500 mg/liter and also you need to check whether there is any harmful metal such as lead, arsenic, and mercury present or not.

In this case, use of UV+UF water purifier is recommended. To save precious water avoid the use of RO water purifier if not necessary. Instead you can install Gravity Based water purifiers, UV water purifiers, UV+UF water purifiers, etc.

12. Use RO water purifier, reuse the wasted RO water

As we discussed in the above point, don’t use RO water purifier if quality of water is good to avoid unnecessary wastage of water. If you Compulsorily need to use an RO water purifier, then you have to re-use the wasted RO water to reduce wastage of water.

  • Reduce Wastage of Water:

Most of the RO water purifier gives about 25% of input water as usable but some branded water purifier gives nearly 50% recovery rate. Do check the recovery rate while intended to buy RO water purifier.

You can change the filters and RO membrane regularly to improve recovery rate. The amount of waste water is high if efficiency of filter and RO membrane become less.

Generally, it takes more time to fill water storage tank than usual if filters or RO membrane gets choked and you need to check it.

  • Re-use the waste Water:

Don’t drain the wasted RO water. Make an arrangement to keep the wasted water for further use. You can use this water for different purposes such as washing utensils, floor mopping, washing your car, watering your plants, etc.

13. Wash Dishes using Hands

Whenever washing dishes with hands turn off the water flow and don’t use running water to clean it. Take a large pan or bucket with water in it and dip the dishes to rinse. This will reduce the wastage of water.

14. Use Pan to clean Fruits & Vegetables

Always use pan whenever you want to clean fruits and vegetables. In this way, you can save extra water which may be flow into drain and can be used to water your plants.

15. Use Efficient Washing Machine

Old type of washing machine takes large amount of water approximately 160 – 180 liters per wash. It can be reduced up to 50% using new advanced washing machine.

Water as well as electricity can be saved using Front-loading washing machines in comparison to top-loading washing machines.

16. Don’t use empty washing machine

If you have only few items for washing, then don’t use washing machine. Economy mode is preferable for clothes that will save water as well as electricity.

17. Use Water Meter

It will help you to know how much water you are spending. Through this you can control extra wastage of water as you cannot measure without it.

Using water meter, you may detect whether any leakage in pipes or not. To do this, turn off all the flow of water for an hour or two, then check the reading of meter. If there are any changes in reading that means leakage in pipe lines or somewhere.

18. Avoid Overflow

In India, almost every house or commercial premises, overflow of water is a common phenomenon. It is found that people store water in tanks but after a specific time water overflows the storage tank.

People can easily control this kind of wastage of water and saves much water by using any one of the below:

  • Use Float Valve:

This is one of the most effective with less expensive instrument to stop water to overflow.

When water fill up to the maximum level in the tank then automatically it stops water flow. When tank is filled with normal water pressure then it is the best option and when motor or pump is used to fill tank then it is not recommended.

  • Use alarm for water tank:

If water is collected in the tank is not by water pump then standard float valve is a better choice.

But when anyone is using a water pump to store water in tank, in that case a small electronic device can be used which alerts you when water is about to overflow.

It does not stop the flow of water into the tank but gives an alarm to alert you. It saves both water and electricity as water pump stop running once tank become full of water.

  • Water Level Controller (Automatic):

It manages level of water in water tank. It is an electronic device contains an electronic controller and sensors in water tank at different levels.

The controller is connected with power supply water motor/pump, and the sensors. This device activated/deactivated automatically when level of water is at the highest or lowest level.

19. Take Precautions while watering Plants in Garden

To have a healthy & green plants in your garden, you can do it without wasting extra water. Do watering only those areas where it really needed. It is preferred that watering in morning or evening is suitable as water will not get evaporated quickly after watering.

Avoid watering in rainy days. Provide water deeply but not frequently as this will help plants to go deeper in the soil and will take less water. If you use pipe for watering, then attached a hose or spray gun at the mouth. hoses and spray guns is effective for larger area and will take less water.

20. Wash Car using Bucket

Washing your car using running water will take much water. Use of bucket is required less water but more effective. You can use soapy water and hose during rinse.
